Directors Commentary

The video above is a video of the opening 2 minutes of our film but with a directors commentary over the top. Our commentary includes some of the things we enjoyed about our media product.

Evaluation 8

What targets will you set yourself for G324 next year - when you make a trailer?

For next year we will set ourselves some targets for when we start making our trailer. Our first target will be to plan out our media production in more detail. This means the process of making our media product would have more structure and we wouldn't have to go back and re-film parts that we missed out.

If we were to re-do our media opening scene we would record the dialogue separately so that the characters can be heard clearer through the dramatic music. Another thing we would do differently is the filming. We would cut less often so that when we starting editing the clips together the scenes would be smoother and the characters would jump less. Using one of our own cameras instead of the school's camera would also be something we would change. This change is necessary because the sound and visual quality of our media production would be better. This would make our trailer more immersive and the audience would be more interested in what the trailer is about.

In our next production we will aim to improve our film making by making our trailer more realistic and dramatic. We will do this by recording the dialogue and sound effects separately. The music choice for our trailer would also be very different so that we can create more tension in the audience. To improve our film making we need to improve our camera composition. We can do this by obeying the 180 rule and the rule of thirds. Our editing skills will also need to improve, we can do this by using a wider range of transitions and special effects. Mise-en-scene in our media production could also be improved. We would try to find a better location for us to film that more secluded from other people. The character costumes also need to be improved because in our opening scene the antagonist was dressed too casually. More mysteries clothes would need to be worn by the antagonist for him to look more like a villian.

Evaluation 7

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to full product?

Editing and camera work
In our preliminary task our editing wasn't as good as the editing in our opening scene because we had only just been introduced to the editing software we were using; Adobe premiere elements 10. The camera work in our preliminary task was more organised than the camera work in our final opening scene. This is because the scenes we had in our opening scene was more complicated and we had to try to capture everything that was happening without disorientating the audience.

Editing terms and techniques
Our preliminary task included most of the editing terms and techniques that we were taught. We had used the 180 degree rule and the rule of thirds when the two characters were having a conversation. Match on action and shot reverse shot was used when the character was walking through the door into the class room. For our final opening scene we lost continuity in the middle of the opening scene because we didn't obey the 180 degree rule. Most of our scenes in the opening scene also showed the character in the middle of the screen, meaning we didn't obey the rule of thirds. At the end of our opening scene we use a shot reverse shot to show the antagonist standing back up after the protagonist asked "Who are you?" We did not use Match on action in our opening scene.

Evaluation 6

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

The image above is a compilation of all of the things we used to create our media production.

Editing Choices
We used Adobe Premiere Elements 10 to edit all of our footage together and make our final media opening scene. The tools we used to edit all of our footage together includes cutting, fading In/Out, transitions and special effects. 5 Seconds into our opening scene we used a transition to make one of our production companies fade from black and white into colour. The fade In/Out and cutting tool were used throughout our whole media production to make our scenes look smooth. The fade In/Out tool was used the most at the beginning when we were showing our production companies, from the time 00:00 to 00:15. The cutting tool was used a lot in the fight scene at the end of our production because it was fast paced, from the time 01:30 to 01:45. We used special effects to make our media production look professional, 1 second in to our opening scene. The special effect 1 second into the our opening scene was a harsh glow which made it seem like our production company logo flashed onto the screen.

Equipment
The equipment we used to film our media production consists of a tripod and a camera that we borrowed from the school. We used the tripod keep our camera steady when we were filming certain camera shots. We didn't re-record any sounds to make them more audible, instead we sourced sound effects from a website.

Programs
Some of the programs we used were Adobe Premiere Elements 10, YouTube and Blogger. The editing program we used was adobe premiere elements 10, this helped us put together the clips we had filmed. Any videos that we created were posted to our YouTube channel. On our YouTube channel it featured all of our presentations and storyboards we put together. We frequently updated our Blog page on Blogger as we progressed in making our final opening scene.

Evaluation 5

How did you attract/address your audience?

In this video we have annotated our final opening scene. We have talked about the different genre conventions we have used, our use of music, similarities our film has with other films and some unique selling points of our final opening scene.

Evaluation 4

What would be the audience for your media product?

Our target audience would be the teenage audience because they usually like fast paced chase scenes and fight scenes. They might also like a love interest in an action thriller film.

Action films tend to be slightly more popular with a male audience and we think that our opening would have appealed for the following reasons:

Empathising with characters:
Our opening scene gives the main protagonist prevalence which makes the audience empathise with the main protagonist. We also have lots of close up shots of the main antagonist which makes the audience empathise with him.

Escapism:
When the main protagonist first gets away from the antagonist the audience questions if the main protagonist has truly escaped from the close encounter with the main antagonist. This makes the audience forget about their real life problems and concentrate on what is going on in the film.

Entertainment:
Our opening scene is entertaining because there is a chase at the beginning of the opening scene and then there is a long build up to the final fight scene in the opening scene. The music also made our opening scene more entertaining because it built up tension in the audience.

Evaluation 3

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
Our production company is "KRC Productions" which is just all our initials. We used to font "Adobe Caslon Pro" because it was coloured blue and its bold so it will stand out from the black background. For the word "Productions" we put it in bold italics because we wanted to make the letters "KRC" stand out more. The letters "KRC" (Font size 217) are larger than the word "Productions" (Font size 68) because we wanted people to remember our production company easily. We didn't want to make our production company logo too complicated so we just put the name of our production company with the word "Productions" offset to one side below it. Our production company logo is very simple but at the same time it looks quite professional because of the font we used and the composition of the words.

What does a production company do?
A production company processes and makes the decisions that take place when making a film. They also help in budgeting, scripting and casting for the film. If something were to go wrong during the production of the film, then the production company would be responsible.

What is a distributor? Who might that be and why?

A distributor is responsible for advertising, merchandising and delivering the film to the market. Film distributors also produce the reels for the films and send them to as many cinemas as possible. A film distributor might be Warner Bros because they help fund the money to make films.

The money that would fund our production would be our film distributors "KRC Productions" and "Red Tree Productions". A company that funds independent budget films is Netflix. Neflix is a large online film distributor. They have been extremely successful because they have original content which you won't be able to watch anywhere else.

In our opening scene we had titles fade in naming directors, writers, actors and cameraman. We but them in this order of importance because the director would be the most important followed by the people who wrote the story to the film and then the actors and cameraman.

Our film is similar to the film "Taken" because it is an action thriller film. The protagonist in our film is also similar to the main protagonist in Taken because they are similar in appearance and their role in their film. Taken's Production companies are: Canal+, Europa-Corp, M6 and RatPac-Dune Entertainment. The production companies of Taken are not extremely popular and are quite unknown, this is another similarity between our film and Taken.

Evaluation 2

How does your media product represent particular social groups?

On the left is our main protagonist in our media production and on the right is Liam Neeson who plays Bryan Mills in the film Taken.

Appearance
These two characters are similar because both of these characters also have a serious expression on their face which makes them look threatening. There are also differences between these two characters, for example: you can't see part of Liam Neeson's face which makes him look more mysterious, where as our character is fully visible in the day time. The two character's ages are also a main difference between the two characters.

Role in Film
The role of Liam Neeson in his film is similar to our protagonist's role because they both try to find out why they are being attacked by the antagonists. They are also similar because they are both forced to use violence in situations where they don't want to fight. Their roles in their films are also different because Liam Neeson is rescuing his daughter in the first Taken Movie and our main protagonist is randomly confronted while walking down a path.

Costume
The two characters are both dressed smartly and look they are part of some secret organisation. The colour of their clothes are also very similar, their clothes are both dark and make them look mysterious. A difference is their costume is that Liam Neeson is wearing a leather coat where as our character isn't wearing a leather coat.

Evaluation 1

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

The Title of our Film
Our media film title subverts the conventions of real media products because the film title normally appears after the dramatic opening scene, where as we've put the movie title at the beginning and end.

Setting/Location
Our Setting/Location for our film conforms the conventions of a typical action film because the area isn't very busy and it's secluded. The area that we picked was very open meaning we had a lot of space to work with when filming.

Costumes and Props
Our costumes conform the conventions of a thriller action movie because our main antagonist (On the right) is wearing clothes that hide his identity. The main protagonist (On the left) is wearing smart clothes which makes him look professional.

Camera Work and Editing
We have conformed the conventions of an action adventure film because we have used dramatic close up shots of the antagonist to create tension in the audience.

In this scene we have also conformed the conventions of an action thriller movie because we have used over the shoulder shots to capture a certain character's point of view.

This is our first production company "KRC Productions". We used a effect called (Name of effect) to make it look more professional. This is conventional because production companies are normally shown at the beginning of the opening scene.

This is our second production company "Red Tree Productions". We used a fade effect to make it look like our production logo faded from black and white to colour. This makes our production look more professional. This is conventional because it makes our film production more professional.

In this scene we used a fade to black to create a transition to another location. This made our production smoother which made the production more professional because there was less jump cuts.

Title font and Style
The font we used for our title was "Bell Gothic Std" and we used the font size 115.The font that we used made our title look bold and dramatic.

Story and how the opening sets it up
This is a long shot used at the beginning of our trailer to establish setting and introduce a key character. We wanted the audience to be able to see a profile of the character and notice the costume and body language.  In this shot our key character seems passive and not really bothered by what is going on around him.

Genre and how the opening suggests it
The genre of film for our film production is action thriller. Our film opening suggests this by including a chase scene to build tension in the audience and then a fight scene to end the opening scene. This conforms to the typical convention of an action thriller opening scene because action thriller films normally contain fast pace chase scenes and fight scenes.

How characters are introduced
The main protagonist is introduced walking down a path at the very beginning of the opening scene. The main antagonist is then introduced with a dramatic entrance. This conforms the conventions of a action thriller because the main antagonist usually makes a dramatic entrance which builds tension in the audience.

Final Opening 2 Minutes

Final Opening 2 Minutes
This is our Final Media Opening 2 Minutes. Our film is called "Knocked Out" and is an action thriller genre movie. We chose the name "Knocked Out" because at the end of our Opening 2 minute the protagonist gets knocked out by the antagonist. This creates confusion in the audience and makes them want to know what happened to the protagonist.

In our opening scene the protagonist is confronted by the antagonist. The antagonist advances on the protagonist but he is able to escape and hide behind a tree. The protagonist then jumps out at he antagonist pushes the antagonist back. The main fight scene in the opening scene then takes place in a clearing where the antagonist is beaten down by the protagonist. Then the protagonist stands over his fallen enemy and asks him "Who are you? Why are you doing this?" The antagonist replies by standing back up and taking off his hood. The opening scene then ends dramatically with the antagonist suddenly attacking again and knocking out the protagonist.
